Twin Senior Pictures Outfits Secrets You Need | Senior Photo Ideas

One of my favorite things about photographing twin senior pictures (well, besides getting to DOUBLE the laughs, personalities, outfits, and energy) is the chance to witness their bond. There's something so undeniably special about the connection between twins, and learning more about their relationship makes the photoshoot experience all the more meaningful. I love asking about who was born first, how their personalities differ, and their future plans (are they going to the same school or headed in different directions for now?). It makes the session multi-dimensional, and as a creative, that's always inspiring.

When it comes to getting ready for your twin senior pictures, the age old question for any senior photoshoot always comes up: what do we wear? This time, there’s double the wardrobe meaning double the decisions, so let’s dive into what makes for a beautiful gallery, while still highlighting both twins in their own ways.

Focus on outfits that “go together” instead of ones that “match” exactly.

Since we take time in each outfit to photograph twins together, it's important that their outfits are cohesive to a degree. The main elements of an outfit from fashion/stylists' perspective is its color, texture, and shape (or silhouette). Each set of outfits doesn't have to be the same color, the same texture AND the same shape, but it is good to try and align at least one of those three elements.

For example, you wouldn't want one twin to be in jeans and a white t-shirt while the other is in a pink gown. Instead, have each twin wear their casual, two-piece outfits at once, followed by a set of dresses or skirt/top combo that is similar in length. Shape is most important to align, followed by colors that go together (i.e. soft pastels vs. deep golden hues), and texture is the third priority.

Unlike girl/girl twins, boy/girl twins are going to have much different shapes/silhouettes when standing side by side. My best advice to make sure each outfit appears as a 'set' is to simply think of it in terms of formality-level, and then do your best to align the color group as well.

So, outfit #1 might be CASUAL –- for him, jeans, sneakers, and a white tee, for her: jeans, flats, and a white blouse.

Outfit #2 could fall into a 'birthday dinner' category — what would they wear to a birthday dinner or night out with friends? For him, he might opt for something more trendy here, like a short sleeve button down with a subtle pattern (i.e. texture) with khakis and sneakers, and she might wear a short, flowy cream dress with embroidered flowers and heels. But, they both fall in the earth tone category (browns, greens, creams).

Finally, outfit 3 could be more formal. Him in a suit, her in a gown, and maybe this time you aim for cooler colors: navy for him + light blue for her.

The cool thing about a twin's senior photoshoot is the automatic story that's built into it. Think about it: whenever you hear that someone you know is having twins, the reaction is always one of surprise and delight. "WOAH! Twins?! Awesome! Wow!" And when you meet a twin, questions pour in like, "Are you identical? Fraternal? Who's older? Who's more ______? Who's more ______?"

Being a twin is SO special and capturing that is easy to do at a senior session –- it just requires a tiny bit of intentionality and planning ahead. Bringing even just ONE prop, like a future plans flag, nods to the future plans for each twin, symbolizing a huge fork in the road that is their journey into adulthood. If not college choice, consider bringing props relating to their sports, hobbies, or contrasting (or similar) personalities!

Even though we maximize efficiency by combining the twins' session together, we never lose sight of the importance that their individual interests, hobbies, and quirks get highlighted, too. As a photographer, our team ensures that a majority of the session is spent taking individual shots, with a smaller portion dedicated to the combined shots. Each senior gets to have their own moment!

Whether you choose one of our signature senior photo albums that features both twins, or order a copy for each — our goal is to strike a balance between the identity of being a twin and the identity of being an individual.

Look, I know it might seem like prepping twin senior pictures outfits is double the work: double the looks, double the props, double the planning — but in reality you're actually operating at max efficiency with twice the fun and energy! You’re able to have both twins' senior portrait experience unfolding at the same time, with each twin doing what they do best — supporting one another. You'll walk away with two sets of solo memories in one, with a beautiful piece of artwork to revisit in the future when (not if) you want to take a time machine back to having both kiddos under one roof.
