Quality Senior Picture Ideas for Guys | SoCal Senior Photos | Luke
There are certain sessions that feel a little extra full-circle, and Luke’s was definitely one of them. The last time I saw him, he was in 8th grade — the “little” brother of my former client, Kayla, whose senior and family photos I took back in 2022. Fast forward a few years, and suddenly I’m meeting up with a 6ft tall high school senior who is somehow towering over both his mom and me! Truly wild how quickly the years zap by. Any parent of a soon-to-be-graduating senior can confirm — it’s a trip!
Luke’s session is a great one if you’re in the market for SoCal senior photos and looking for senior picture ideas for guys. As a kid who grew up in Orange County, taking photos in the 'small town beach vibes' that Laguna has to offer is a popular choice, and for Luke's mom Sandy, he was no exception. Like many seniors, they were looking for that 'classic southern CA’ look.
We started in downtown Laguna, which is super fun to photograph at. There’s so much variety built into such a small area — brick walls, murals, staircases, architectural details. Sometimes just walking 20 steps in one direction gives you a completely different backdrop. It’s one of those places where the gallery just naturally ends up feeling really dynamic without having to overthink it.
And despite the fact that this session fell during a week of rain, we decided to go for it.
With Luke’s schedule (and a big CIF basketball game later that day), there wasn’t a ton of flexibility to reschedule, so we kept a close eye on the forecast and made the final call within 24 hours. Sometimes the absolute best, most clear, breath-taking conditions happen just after a bit of rain, which was definitely the case here.
This session was super laid-back from start to finish. Since Luke and I had worked together before, there was already that level of trust, and I went into it knowing we wanted to keep things relaxed, easy-going, stress-free, and efficient (especially with a 10AM school deadline looming — can’t forget about the athletics attendance deadline rules)!
When it comes to senior picture ideas for guys, one thing I always come back to is keeping poses natural and comfortable.
Seated shots are one of my favorites, and they tend to work really well for guys. For the image that we ended up picking for Luke’s album cover, we used a simple pose that feels like a natural position for most guys. I had him bring one foot up onto a higher step (with the leg closest to the camera lower), rest his forearm on that higher leg, and loosely connect his hands at the wrists in the middle. From there, it’s just a quick posture check — even when leaning forward, you still want those shoulders slightly pulled back — and that’s it!
It’s one of those poses that looks super relaxed but still photographs really clean and put-together.
After downtown, we made our way to a local cove to wrap things up by the water. That mix of structured, architectural backdrops with the more open, coastal feel is always a great combination. It gives you the best of both worlds and adds so much depth to the final gallery.
Luke absolutely nailed his session. Between his easygoing energy and the variety of locations, this one came together in such a natural way. Sessions like this are such a good reminder that senior photos don’t have to feel overcomplicated to turn out really, really well.
If you’re looking for senior picture ideas for guys that feel natural, effortless, and true to you, this is exactly the kind of approach I’d recommend.
