TCU Senior Pictures in SoCal | Coastal Cowgirl Senior Photos
At this point, TCU senior pictures have practically become their own category of senior session over here. Let’s talk about the California → Texas pipeline for a second, shall we?
When I first started photographing high school seniors, I saw all sorts of colleges represented—east coast, west coast, the Pacific Northwest, and yes…the South. Truth be told, there’s always 1 or 2 schools that trend in popularity with each graduating class. For a while it was Boise State and Alabama, and more recently the University of Utah started to pop up, too. But then suddenly, TCU (Texas Christian University) specifically caught on like wildfire. Something about purple and horned frogs seemed to hook the Orange County senior. And honestly? I think I understand why.
Between the gorgeous campus, palpable school spirit culture, star-studded football program, vibrant greek life, and the overall energy surrounding the school, it’s easy to see why so many California seniors are drawn to it. Not to mention, TCU was ranked the #1 school for happiest students by The Princeton Review in 2026 and ranked #4 most beautiful campus. That’ll do it!
Fun fact: California is actually the second most represented state in the TCU student body, right behind Texas. Which makes perfect sense to me. For the California girl ready to put the cowgirl in “coastal cowgirl,” Fort Worth feels like the perfect place to make that transition.
And maybe I’m a little biased because TCU was actually one of the schools I applied to myself as a senior. (Their cheer program is incredible!) I ended up choosing Cal Poly SLO instead, but one of my best friends from high school went to TCU and absolutely loved it. So getting to photograph seniors who are headed there now feels extra fun and nostalgic.
One thing I’ve noticed about TCU-bound seniors? They COMMIT to the theme in the best way possible.
Purple outfits for TCU senior pictures just work. Especially in Southern California locations where the colors naturally complement each other so beautifully.
One of my favorite recurring combinations has been photographing purple outfits in yellow flower fields. Purple and yellow are complementary colors, so together they create this really bold but still natural contrast that I love love love to photograph.
Ava absolutely nailed the purple theme during her session. She wore the cutest purple lace two-piece set, paired another outfit with lavender metallic boots, and incorporated her TCU sweatshirt into the session. It felt trendy, school spirited, and still very her.
And that’s really the goal with college choice photos. We want the college to feel incorporated — not like the entire photoshoot suddenly turned into a recruitment ad! In every senior session, the student is the star, and college choice is the accessory.
Speaking of accessories, if there’s one prop that consistently wins during TCU senior pictures, it’s definitely the pennant flag.
They’re lightweight, easy to hold, and unlike the giant college flags, they don’t completely take over the image when the wind picks up (which is especially important at the beach). Bigger flags do look amazing, but getting them to cooperate in coastal wind conditions can (at times) become a full team sport real fast.
Another must is the Horned Frogs hand sign.
Not every college has a recognizable hand symbol, but for the schools that do, it’s such a fun thing to incorporate into the gallery. And the TCU one is especially cute and recognizable.
I also love how many TCU-bound seniors lean into jerseys, denim skirts or shorts, and cowgirl boots lately. This combo is so on-trend right now and somehow manages to feel both relaxed and full of school spirit at the same time.
One thing about my clients is they’re going to involve their dogs whenever possible and I fully support it!
Kali brought her dog in a matching TCU jersey, which was hilarious and so cute. Cecilia had her pup wearing a tiny TCU bandana and it absolutely stole the show.
These little details make the gallery feel personal. And years from now, you’re going to be glad you captured the moment with your pup!
There’s also something really sentimental about taking TCU senior pictures in Orange County before heading off to Texas.
A beach session, flower fields, golden light, coastal vibes… it feels like this really beautiful “see you later” to home before stepping into a completely new season of life somewhere else.
And with country music and western influence exploding in Southern California over the last several years, it makes total sense that so many seniors here are gravitating toward Texas schools and that whole coastal cowgirl aesthetic.
Whether you want full-on school spirit, subtle college nods, or somewhere in between, TCU senior pictures are such a fun way to celebrate both where you’re coming from and where you’re headed next.
