Cap and Gown Pictures | How to Make Them Feel Like You

Cap and gown pictures can bring out a bit of hesitation when it comes to a senior session, and I get it. You want your photos to feel elevated, natural, and not like the ones taken in your school gym with the colored backdrop. But cap and gown pictures don’t have to feel stiff or overly traditional. With the right approach, they can actually end up being some of the most meaningful photos in your entire gallery.

Because at the end of the day, this is why you’re here — you’re graduating. That alone is something worth celebrating!

If I had to pick my favorite thing about cap and gown pictures, it would be the tradition.

Education is such a privilege, and this moment — finishing high school and stepping into what’s next — deserves to be honored as such. These photos aren’t just about the outfit, they’re about what it represents.

And for the seniors who feel a little on the fence about including them, you are not alone. If you don't want to wear the whole ensemble, no big. You don’t have to go all in if you don’t want to.

We can keep it minimal, we can keep it relaxed, or we can go full traditional — totally your call.

One of my favorite parts about cap and gown pictures is how flexible they can be. You can style them in a way that still feels like you while honoring the tradition.

1. Cap Only (No Gown)

This is the most minimal way to incorporate the cap and gown into your session, and honestly, it’s such a good one.

Think of the cap as an accessory.

You can hold it in front of your belly button in a diamond shape with the tassel hanging down, or walk and swing it at your side like you’re carrying a purse. It’s simple, clean, and still gets the message across — you’re a graduate!

2. Cap & Gown (Without Wearing the Cap)

This is a little more committed to the look, and my personal favorite rendition.

You get the full look of the traditional cap and gown, but your hair stays exactly how you styled it (which is a big deal for a lot of seniors — totally understandable).

Then we can play with poses like holding the cap in front of you or doing a “pretend toss” for a more feminine feel. For guys, we usually go for a full toss or something a little more straightforward and celebratory.

3. Cap & Gown (The Full Look)

The whole sha-bang!

As a senior photographer, I always recommend getting at least one portrait fully in your cap and gown. Parents LOVE this shot, and it’s completely different from your yearbook photo because it’s taken in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Pro tip: leave the gown unzipped.

This lets your outfit underneath show through and keeps the overall look more relaxed and breathable.

What to wear under your cap and gown is where your personality really comes through in your cap and gown pictures.

For girls, the go-to is a short white dress — especially one that’s shorter than the length of the gown so it doesn’t compete with it. It’s clean, timeless, and works with pretty much any setting.

If your school has white caps and gowns, a colored dress is also a really fun option. A lot of seniors lean into their school colors, but you can also just pick a color you love.

One of my favorite examples of this was Thira who wore a bright pink dress and even chose a matching pink fabric for her album cover to complement her cap and gown photos. It was so her, and it made the final artwork feel really intentional.

As for cap and gown picture outfits for guys, you’ve got a couple great options.

A casual fit like a white tee and jeans or khakis always works, but if you want to elevate things a bit, a collared button-up with dress pants is even better. And don’t forget — a letterman jacket is a great alternative if you want to skip the gown altogether.

Cap tosses are always a highlight during cap and gown pictures… though I will grant a client bonus points they can catch it and make sure it doesn't fling back into ocean water!

I can’t tell you how many tassels have flown off into grass, sand, or dangerously close to the ocean. This is why I often recommend using tassels from Amazon instead of your real one — or at the very least, double-wrapping it around the center button so it stays put during any tossing.

And if you’re planning to bring a college stole, just know they can be a little tricky outdoors, especially if there’s a breeze. But honestly, that’s half the fun!

At the end of the day, cap and gown pictures don’t have to feel like a chore or something you just “check off the list.”

I promise they can be fun and stylish! We will make them feel like you.

And more than anything, they’re a way to pause and celebrate everything you’ve worked for.

So whether you go full traditional or keep it minimal with just the cap, I promise, you won’t regret including them.
